Waiting takes many forms. No one likes to wait though. Whether one is in a grocery line or in a traffic jam, we all hate to wait. We hate to wait, because of the tension that builds within us. There is a yearning for something to occur, but it doesn't. In waiting we believe our current condition or situation is so bad compared to our hoped for situation.
Advent is about waiting. It recalls the people of Israel waiting for the coming Messiah - Jesus Christ. Many missed it. Advent also anticipates Jesus' second coming.
Am I waiting for his second coming? Sometimes I long for it. I am tired of the sin and corruption of this world. Other times, I seem very comfortable with this world. At those points, I am not anticipating Jesus coming. I am too content.
Advent reminds me to wait.
