Well, I didn't know what to do. I tried to check out the phone number on our laptop, but I could find no information about it. In the end I decided to call this number. However, what I did do was take my laptop with me in order to check out anything said. A person with a different nationality answered; she was hard to understand, but she was nice.
As we talked, I left her have control my computer. She showed me my IP address and showed me that there were foreign hackers supposedly. She came to a place where she said torpig had entered my computer and this collects personal data. Intriguingly, she showed me a wikipedia page about torpig. However, that is where she went wrong. I checked it out on wikipedia and it was totally different. Her wikipedia page said who could not correct it, which I also found fishy. Essentially, she then told me who could fix it.
I was asked for a zip code, so that a place near me could fix it. She gave me protectera.net. Again, I checked it out, and it was not near me. It was a website. I thought it said it was from Australia, but either way, it was not near me. They would charge me only $250 if I used them. And if I let her transfer me to them, they would not charge an extra $100. I knew for sure that it was a scam. I told her I was not interested and we brought our time to an end.
Be careful out there. First of all, I don't how they had access to my computer in the first place. But either way, they were out to rob people of their money. Don't trust everything you read. By the way, after I hung up, I restarted the computer and everything is working normally again.
Secondly, while I am on a soapbox, I am dismayed over Amazon. In the "old days" companies would ship your item purchased immediately, the next business day. If you wanted faster shipping, you would pay extra. Recently, I purchased something through Amazon, and they waited a week to ship it. It only took one day to come. Why would they wait a week? Amazon prime, which people pay for and is a big money maker for them, guarantees to have your product delivered in two days. If they would have shipped immediately, I would have received something quicker than Amazon prime. So, to encourage people to purchase Amazon prime, they intentionally wait a week to ship things so that they can make their money.
As you know and I have just demonstrated, people are hungry for money and will find ways to get it. Beware.
Because Amazon wants to make money, they won't ship your items immediately. If you get Amazon prime, you can get things for free within two days. There is a charge for shipping most other ways. However, just recently I ordered something, and they waited a week to ship it. It took only one day from the shipping to actually being delivered. Money drives so much.
In the "old" days, companies would ship your item immediately, as soon as they could. You would pay extra for faster shipping.
