This show surprised me. Law and Order has classic endings with supposedly profound statements. This one switched scenes though. The detective all of a sudden was talking to a lady who was not part of the show. But as he talks you realize that he is talking with a psychologist or a counselor of some sort. He apparently is resisting sharing for some reason. He tells this interesting story which I have heard many times to be true.
This detective says he has a mechanic friend. Occasionally, a customer with an old car would come to the mechanic and say the engine is not working. The mechanic would ask questions and discover that the man just had the car engine washed to get rid of all the gunk. Over time that gunk actually became "part" of the engine. By taking away that gunk it hurt the engine and could no longer function.
The detective used that parable to illustrate that if he shared his gunk with the psychologist, he might not be able to function anymore. Allowing that gunk in his life helped him deal with all the evil he had to face. I don't remember what the psychologist said; I just loved the illustration. Yet, one has to ask the detective, "So why are you in the psychologist's office in the first place?" Something had to be wrong. (The psychologist probably said something like that.)
Law and Order is a story. But as that show closed, they revealed a truth about life. Many people prefer leaving the gunk in their life, because they are afraid they cannot function without it. They struggle in life with the gunk, yet they are afraid to live without it. I say, "Get rid of the gunk!" At the same time, I have to beware of my own gunk. You and I need to allow God's Spirit to cleanse our lives, so our "engine can purr." That is how we were intended to live. Yet, we allow the gunk to hang around; it troubles us, and yet we are afraid to give it up.
As a follower of Jesus, the more we offer the engine of our life to him, our heart, the more he cleans our engine, the more efficiently our engine runs. That doesn't mean we won't experience hills and mountains in life. It just means our engine will have the power to drive over or through the hills. "Get rid of the gunk!" "Happy motoring with Jesus!"
