As I watched, I observed that some people were going in slow motion. I did not know how long they were there, or if it was the heat that was getting to them. Some of the guys seemed pretty good; they would probably wipe me out. On the other hand, I bet I could wipe some of them out. By the way, I am sure I was twice the age of most all there; the term, "Old Boy."
Well, in between their games, I got onto the court and shot around. Finally, after three or so games of watching, I got my chance. A couple people were leaving, and they needed someone else. The one guy saw I just had made two or three jumpers in a row, so he asked if I wanted to play. I said, "Sure," or something like it. This "Old Boy" got to play five on five basketball, I held my own with the young guys. Someone renamed me during the games to "Mr. Fundamentals." That's a name I would rather have. It sounds a lot better than "Old Boy." Well, at the end of the two games I played, I was asked by one of the better players if I had played on a team. The answer was "No," at least, not in the way they thought. But did you hear that question they asked me. That player respected my basketball playing ability. I am almost sure he was the one who called me "Old Boy" and then "Mr. Fundamentals."
So why am I writing this? I believe God has showed me a way to connect with some younger people. I was at the same court one day earlier, and I played ball with a 14 year old and his friend. I thought by going back around the same time the next day, the boy and his friend might be there again. They weren't, but there was a whole group of guys there.
God gave me an opportunity and the basketball ability to earn their respect that evening. Now, I am praying that those opportunities will occur again, not only so I can play basketball, but even more, so that I can build a relationship with them and connect them with Jesus Christ.
Well, if you are wondering where I am some evenings, you might find out that this graying and receding headed "Old Boy" is trying to use basketball to point people to Jesus.
P.S. What's your skill and ability or hobby? Have you ever thought of using it to connect with others, and then even with Jesus?
